Travel calculations

Route suggestions

Suggested trips are estimated in relation to your selected origin and destination points as determined by Google Maps Directions API and may change over time.

Tolled trips represent routes that incorporate one or more toll road(s) for all or part of the trip. Untolled trips refer to the routes that avoid tolls as determined by Google Maps Directions API. Untolled trips may change over time based on Google Maps Directions API. If the Google Maps Directions API determines a tolled and an untolled route, Trip Compare will display both (or may even display multiple tolled routes). In some cases, Google Maps Directions API may not determine: (a) a tolled route, in which case Trip Compare will display the fastest untolled route determined by Google Maps Directions API; or (b) a untolled route, in which case Trip Compare will only display the tolled route determined by Google Maps Directions API.

Travel times are based on time of departure from your selected origin.

Toll costs

Toll costs are based on the trip cost for a single direction trip for travel with (tag) or without (tagless) a tag for a standard car. Motorbikes, light commercial, heavy commercial and super heavy commercial vehicles will be charged at a rate that is different to the estimate provided in this tool. Toll cost displayed in the Trip Compare tool for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour Tunnel and EastLink may vary from the actual toll cost, depending on the time and day of travel. The Trip Compare tool displays the toll cost at time of departure for Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour Tunnel and EastLink. Refer to our toll calculators  for Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to estimate cost of your trips based on your individual travel needs, e.g. time of day, day of week and vehicle type.

Changing time and day of travel

By default, Trip Compare displays the current travel times for the selected trips, including current traffic conditions. When you adjust the time and day of travel, travel times are based on the predicted future travel times provided by Google Maps Directions API. If you are planning a future trip, the displayed trip will not take into account traffic disruptions due to scheduled maintenance and planned works.

Vehicle efficiency

Vehicle fuel and greenhouse gas estimates are based on formulas extracted from vehicle emissions modelling software COPERT Australia. This method is consistent with what Transurban uses each year in its annual public Sustainability Report to estimate customer vehicle emissions. Comparisons take into account trip distance and travel time information from Google Maps Directions API to calculate the speed for each tolled trip and untolled trip. Results represent a typical petrol passenger car. Actual fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will vary for individual vehicle models and driving behaviour.

Fuel and emissions conversion factors are sourced from the Australian Government – Department of the Environment and Energy National Greenhouse Accounts Factors for post-2004 vehicles. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia Licence.

Traffic lights

Traffic light data is sourced from © OpenStreetMap contributors and is licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL). Traffic light counts are based on intersection traffic lights. Traffic light data is an estimate only and variances may occur, particularly if the trip includes a tunnel.
