The trial 24 hour closure of the Northbound Cleveland Street off-ramp has been extended until 1 February 2018.

The Eastern Distributor Motorway (ED) has been conducting the trial closure of the off-ramp 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since July 2017.

In the past, the off-ramp was closed during morning and evening peak periods, between 6am and 10am and from 3pm to 7pm on weekdays.

Congestion on the ramp frequently extended back onto the northbound lanes of the Eastern Distributor and South Dowling Street, causing obstruction to the through lanes. This often resulted in safety incidents, and caused significant delays to northbound traffic in the morning peak.

The results of this trial so far, have shown that motorists are experiencing safer, faster and more reliable journeys when driving along South Dowling Street and the Eastern Distributor. We have also received positive feedback from the local community about the enhanced safety of the surrounding area as an additional outcome of the trial.

An extension of the trial enables us to complete a comprehensive review of safety data and assess the impacts and improvements on the wider road network.

The trial involves daily and weekly monitoring of travel times and journey reliability to validate the expected improvement in safety and journey times. Throughout the trial, motorists who wish to access Cleveland Street from the Eastern Distributor will need to exit earlier at the South Dowling Street or Link Road exits.

Electronic messaging signs are in place to inform motorists of the change in access to Cleveland Street.
