We know that during the holidays you may be travelling outside of your normal day-to-day drive which includes roads—tolled or untolled—that are new to you.

Together with NeuRa research institute, Transurban’s partner in road safety research, we’ve put together some useful information to help keep you safe on the road this holiday season.

Tunnel safety

Transurban’s tunnels are monitored 24 hours a day. In the event of a breakdown or emergency, remain in your vehicle and the Transurban Incident Response Crew will be with you in a matter of minutes. When travelling in a tunnel:

  • listen to your radio (emergency broadcasts are streamed into normal stations)
  • get into your exit lane early
  • always turn your headlights on.

Packing the car

Driving safely isn’t the only way to stay safe on the road. The way you pack your car can help reduce injury if you have an accident. Unsecured objects can become dangerous and could impact with a force up to 20 times their own weight. So make sure your holiday luggage—surfboard, esky, presents and other items—is properly secured and kept below the height of the back seat.

Lane change and merging

One of the most common traffic accidents occurs when changing lanes or merging. Avoid accidents like these by:

  • indicating early
  • checking your mirrors and blind spots
  • entering as closely as possible to the speed of the traffic when merging onto a freeway.

Remember to take your time on the road, keep your distance from the vehicles around you and plan ahead before you travel.
