Sensors monitor the levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter within our tunnels. These readings are sent to our control centres who then manage the ventilation system to ensure optimal air quality and visibility are maintained.
We monitor and report on the emission levels from our air stacks according to Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) specifications. Our emission rates consistently fall well below EPA limits and the frequency of our air quality reporting exceeds requirements.
The air quality interactive table with monthly data is published quarterly, for both the Burnley Tunnel and Domain Tunnel.
CO: Carbon Monoxide: A product of incomplete combustion of fuel in engines.
NO2: Nitrogen Dioxide: Produced through the oxidation of atmospheric Nitrogen during the combustion process.
PM10: Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or smaller. PM10 includes PM2.5 (below).
PM2.5 Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microns or smaller.
