Safety

  Road safety

The safety of our customers is our number one priority. We monitor our toll roads 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and conduct regular equipment checks and maintenance across our toll road network.

If you break down or have an accident on a road, bridge or in a tunnel, 24/7 safety cameras will alert our control room operators and we’ll send out an incident response unit to assist you right away.

Other innovations such as electronic signage, variable speed limits, radio re-broadcasting and over-height vehicle detections let you know what's happening on the road ahead, preventing bottlenecks and keeping you safe.

 Tunnel safety

Our tunnels are equipped with world-class tunnel safety features including incident detection and response systems, fire safety, emergency phones, public address radio, emergency exits, variable speed limits and real-time electronic message signs.

 Breakdowns

Breakdowns on motorways and in tunnels can disrupt traffic and be a safety hazard. Keep your vehicle maintained and read our simple tips for driving in tunnels or during a breakdown to help keep you and other travellers safe. If you do break down we've got eyes on the road 24/7, call us on 13 33 31 and our incident response team will be with you in 5 minutes or less (on average).

Vehicle checklist

  • Don’t drive on motorways and in tunnels when you’re very low on fuel
  • Ensure you have an inflated spare tyre
  • Secure your load
  • Obey road signs, including the overhead lane signs

 Road signs

We use motorway management systems that allows us to change speed limits, close lanes and provide travel information in response to what’s happening on the road.

Sometimes we need to lower speed limits or close lanes to ensure the safety of motorists, response teams or our road workers. It's the law for motorists to adhere to the posted speed limit and not drive in closed lanes.

Sustainability

The reality of climate change means we cannot — and have not — been sitting idly by without reducing our use of non-renewable-materials and energy. We’re redesigning the materials and methods we use with the goal of transforming our environmental impacts and bringing them ever closer to net zero.

This reimagining of our operations extends to the protections we give to local flora and fauna, and to reducing the impact of noise and air pollution on communities living near our roads.

 Environmental initiatives

  • Transitioning to renewables
Entered into a Victorian Renewable Retail PPA to meet 100% of CityLink's electricity consumption with renewable energy from 2024 onwards.
  • Electric vehicle support
Dedicated incident response vehicle that can help charge electric vehicles.
  • Reductions in electricity use
We are improving the energy efficiency of our motorways and expect to reduce our energy usage by 10% in 10 years (from 2013).
  • Technological innovations
Ventilation optimisation trial underway on CityLink to improve energy consumption while maintaining high air quality standards.
  • Low and Zero Emission Fleets
With 5% of our operating emissions coming from fuel use, we are investigating the replacement of our existing fleets with low and zero-emission vehicle options.
  • Eco-driving
Working with GOFAR to help our customers save on fuel and emissions. Learn more about this initiative

Our people and communities

Transurban’s purpose is to strengthen communities through transport. Our customers, local communities and employees are all important stakeholders in this vision. Visit the link below to find out more about how we work with residents near our roads, build community partnerships, improve customer service and how we are promoting a diverse and flexible working environment.

Air quality and environmental monitoring

Making sure we maintain good air quality on our roads and projects is vital to the liveability, health and safety of neighbouring communities.

We're required to meet stringent environmental measures within operational tunnels, which are reported to and enforced by the relevant authority in each state. These monitoring and reporting requirements vary for our different roads and tunnels.

For Victorian tunnels, we monitor and report on:

  • CO: Carbon Monoxide: A product of incomplete combustion of fuel in engines.
  • NO2: Nitrogen Dioxide: Produced through the oxidation of atmospheric Nitrogen during the combustion process.
  • PM10: Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or smaller. PM10 includes PM2.5
  • PM2.5: Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microns or smaller.
