The NSW Government has introduced changes to the way unpaid tolls are managed in NSW.
We've worked with the NSW Government to support these changes and make it easier for customers to identify and resolve unpaid tolls sooner.
If you have an active toll account or pass for your vehicle before you travel, you're already good to go. These changes are focused on addressing unpaid travel.
As part of the NSW Government’s toll reform program:
- Paper toll notices are being replaced with digital reminders for eligible customers
- Toll notice administration fees have been switched off
- Customers receive earlier notifications about unpaid tolls, but enforcement action may occur sooner if tolls remain unpaid
- Vehicle owners are responsible for unpaid tolls, even if they weren't driving the vehicle at the time

What’s changed?
Digital reminders for unpaid travel
Instead of paper toll notices, NSW is moving to digital reminders to help drivers resolve unpaid tolls sooner.
If you travel on a toll road without paying:
- You may receive an Unpaid Toll Reminder by email a few days after travel. SMS notifications will be introduced as part of the phased rollout.
- If your tolls remain unpaid, you may receive a Toll Payment Demand by email along with an SMS alert where available. This is your final notification before enforcement action may begin.
- If digital contact details aren't linked to your vehicle registration, or you have an ABN-registered vehicle, a printed version of the Toll Payment Demand will be sent by post.
Digital reminders are issued by NSW Motorways using the email address and mobile number linked to your vehicle registration with Service NSW.
Toll notice administration fees have been switched off
Toll notices are no longer being issued and toll notice administration fees have been switched off.
Administration fees continue to apply to toll notices issued before the changes came into effect and will still need to be paid.
If you have outstanding toll notices, they may continue to progress through the existing process if they remain unpaid. It's important to address them as soon as possible.
Customers may still be eligible to transfer older unpaid toll notices to a NSW toll account and receive a significant reduction in administration fees.
Earlier notifications and quicker enforcement action
The new process provides earlier notifications to help customers identify and resolve unpaid tolls sooner.
If tolls remain unpaid after reminders have been issued, enforcement action may occur sooner than under the previous process. This can include:
- a Penalty Notice (fine)
- suspension of vehicle registration or licence
- debt collection
- other legal action
The best way to keep your toll payments up to date is to open an account.
Changes to responsibility for unpaid tolls
Under the NSW Roads Regulation, vehicle owners are responsible for unpaid tolls and charges, even if they weren't driving the vehicle at the time.
This means driver nominations aren't available for Toll Payment Demands.
What do I need to do?
Make sure you have an active toll account or pass
These changes are designed to address unpaid tolls. If you have an active toll account or pass for your vehicle(s) before you travel, you are good to go.
If you don’t have an active account or pass, your trip will result in unpaid tolls, which may progress to enforcement action if left unresolved.
The easiest way to avoid unpaid tolls is to set up a tolling account.
Check your vehicles
If you have more than one vehicle on your account, check that all vehicles have been added and that your vehicle details are up to date.
Check your contact details
Notifications about unpaid tolls are sent using the email address and mobile number linked to your vehicle registration with Service NSW.
These notifications are not sent using the contact details stored on your Linkt account.
To receive digital reminders, make sure your vehicle registration contact details are current. You can check or update them through your MyServiceNSW account or by calling Service NSW on 13 77 88.
It's also a good idea to check that your Linkt account details and payment information are up to date.
