Introducing the New M4 Tunnels

Enjoy a smoother, more reliable ride on the M4 with the New M4 Tunnels.

The $3.8 billion New M4 Tunnels are now open.

Drivers will now experience smoother and more reliable trips on the New M4 in the morning and afternoon compared to Parramatta Road. Travel time from Parramatta to the Sydney CBD is anticipated to reduce by up to 20 minutes.

The two tunnels are the first underground section of WestConnex to be complete, connecting and extending the widened M4 from Homebush to Haberfield with three lanes in each direction.

The New M4 Tunnels have a variable speed limit of up to 80km/h, consistent with other tunnels in Sydney.

The new tunnels allow drivers to skip up to 22 sets of traffic lights. Drivers travelling between Parramatta and Haberfield on the New M4 can also skip up to 42 sets of traffic lights.

How to pay for tolls on the New M4

A distanced-based toll applies to trips in the New M4 Tunnels between Homebush and Haberfield—meaning you’ll only pay for what you use. Use our toll calculator to quickly estimate the cost of your toll road travel in Sydney.

If you don't have a Linkt account or pass, you can compare accounts and passes to find a product that works for you.

The final sections of WestConnex include the New M5 and the M4-M5 Link Tunnels, with completion expected in 2023. When finished, WestConnex will double road capacity along the M5 East corridor and form a seamless motorway without traffic lights via the M4-M5 Link Tunnels.
