New weight restrictions on ramp connecting the Bolte Bridge and West Gate Freeway

From 9:30am, Tuesday 19 September 2023, the maximum vehicle weight allowed on the West Gate Freeway overpass connecting to the Bolte Bridge will be temporarily reduced.

Despite current weight restrictions, we’ve seen an increase in oversized vehicles illegally using the bridge, causing deterioration that requires us to carry out strengthening works.

With safety always our key priority, we need to temporarily lower the weight limit on the bridge from 68.5 tonnes to 44 tonnes to protect its structural integrity while we carry out the necessary strengthening works.

The bridge remains safe for all general road users and freight vehicles weighing 44 tonnes or less. Detours are in place for vehicles over 44 tonne. See detour maps below.

We understand this will impact the freight industry as they go about their travels. We’re working closely with industry, the Department of Transport and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to help inform freight about the changes and ensure heavy vehicle detours are well communicated so drivers can plan ahead to minimise disruptions to their operations.

To stay up to date with the latest changes to load limits as they happen see the heavy vehicle maps at VicRoads
