West Gate Tunnel - free weekend travel in January

West Gate Tunnel is now open, and we want to say a big thank you to drivers! 

In January 2026, travel on the West Gate Tunnel will be free on weekends. 

This includes the heavy vehicle toll point on the West Gate Freeway. 

Your tag won’t beep when you pass through a West Gate Tunnel toll point, and you won’t see a charge on your Linkt (or other tolling provider, e.g. Eastlink) account. 

Tolls on West Gate Tunnel will still apply from Monday to Friday and Public Holidays. The easier and cheaper way to travel is to have a Linkt account. If you download the Linkt app, you can also access Linkt Rewards. 

This is just one exciting way we’re celebrating the opening of the West Gate Tunnel.

FAQs

  • Which part of the West Gate Tunnel is free to travel on during January weekends?

    You will not be charged for travel through any toll points on the West Gate Tunnel. This includes the tunnel, Hyde Street ramps and West Gate Freeway heavy vehicle toll point.

  • What times does it apply?

    Your travel will be free throughout the whole weekend from midnight Friday (Saturday 12am) to midnight Sunday (Monday 12am).  

    These dates include: 

    • Sat 3 & Sun 4 Jan 
    • Sat 10 & Sun 11 Jan 
    • Sat 17 & Sun 18 Jan 
    • Sat 24 & Sun 25 Jan 
    • Sat 31 Jan 

    There is no limit on the number of trips you can take on the West Gate Tunnel during the weekend. 

  • Does this include Public Holidays?

    The offer is for Saturdays and Sundays in January. The Australia Day public holiday on Monday 26 January 2026 is not included. 

  • Does this include travel on CityLink and Eastlink too?

    No, free weekend travel in January 2026 only applies for West Gate Tunnel trips as we thank drivers for their patience while we built this new part of Melbourne’s road network. If you travel on CityLink or Eastlink during this time you need to have a tolling account or pass to cover your travel otherwise you will receive a toll invoice. 

  • I have purchased a Pass – can I get a credit if I use it on the weekend?

    24 Hour Passes are still available on our website as Citylink travel is still tolled.  There is a reminder on this web page that travel on West Gate Tunnel during a January weekend is free and you don’t need to purchase a pass on Saturdays or Sundays.

  • I was in a taxi and got charged for using West Gate Tunnel on a weekend?

    West Gate Tunnel tolls are not being charged on Saturdays and Sundays in January. Taxi and Ride Share companies are aware of this initiative. If you were charged tolls during that weekend while using a taxi or rideshare service, please contact the company directly and request a refund. 

  • If I travel on West Gate Tunnel with an Eastlink account, do I still get free travel?

    All travel on the West Gate Tunnel on Saturdays and Sundays in January is free. It won’t be recorded on any tolling accounts. If you travel during weekdays, the trip will appear a few days later on your Eastlink account like with CityLink travel.
