Unpaid trip notification
If you’ve received an email from NSW Motorways about an unpaid trip on a NSW toll road, here’s what you need to know.
From 15 December 2025, NSW Motorways will send reminder emails to those who have travelled on a toll road but haven’t yet paid. The email isn’t a fine or a toll notice - it's a reminder sent shortly after your travel (typically 3-4 days, and up to 6 days) to give you time to pay before a toll notice is mailed and administration fees are charged.
What do I need to do?
To avoid a toll notice, you need to pay for your trips within 10 days of travel using one of the below payment options or reactivating your account if you have one.
If you’ve already paid for your trip, there’s nothing you need to do. You can disregard the email.
I have a Linkt account or pass. Why did I receive this email and what do I need to do?
If you already have a Linkt account or pass but have received the email, your account or pass may be suspended, or your vehicle may not have been linked to your account at the time of travel. You don’t need to open a new account, but you should log in and check your account status.
- If your account is suspended, reactivate it by logging in and paying any outstanding amount. Check your payment details and make sure your licence plate number is correctly linked.
- If your vehicle isn’t linked to your account, log in and add your vehicle’s licence plate number and state of registration
- If you linked the vehicle to your account recently, log in and check that the vehicle start date covers your unpaid trip
Taking these steps means you’re ready for future travel. But, it’s a good idea to also search and pay for your recent travel using your licence plate details.
I don't have a Linkt account. What do I need to do?
There are three easy ways to pay for your recent Sydney toll trips:
- Open a Linkt account and add your vehicles
Open a Linkt account and set the start date of your vehicles to cover trips made up to 10 days ago (excludes Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel). Once your account is active and your vehicle’s licence plate is linked, future trips will be charged to your account. - Search and pay
If you prefer not to open an account right now, you can search and pay for trips taken up to 10 days ago* using your licence plate number and state of registration. *Most trips will be available to pay 24 hours after travel, but some trips may not appear until 3-4 days after travel.
- Buy a pass and add your vehicles
Buy a Sydney Pass and set the start date of your vehicles to cover trips made up to 5 days ago (excludes Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel). Once your pass is active and your vehicle’s licence plate is linked, trips made by that vehicle will be charged to your pass for up to 30 days.
Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel travel
For past travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Harbour Tunnel, you need to pay via E‑Toll or set up an E‑Toll pass within 3 days of travel. If a toll notice has already been issued, you can pay it online via Service NSW.
What happens if I don’t pay?
If you don’t pay for your travel within 10 days, a toll notice will be mailed to you. Toll notices include the toll cost plus a $10 administration fee for each toll road used. If it isn’t paid by the due date, you’ll be mailed a final notice that includes more fees.
How do I know the unpaid trip email is legitimate?
Here are a few steps to check if the email is real and stay safe from scams:
- Check the sender. Emails will be sent from NSW Motorways, using the email address notifications@motorways.nsw.gov.au
- Links in the email. Legitimate reminders from NSW Motorways do not include links. If you think you've received a suspicious email or SMS, don’t click links or reply.
- To pay, always visit the Linkt or E-Toll website to search for your unpaid trips.
Who are NSW Motorways? Why are they emailing me?
NSW Motorways was established by the NSW Government to assist with managing tolling for the NSW road network. NSW Motorways manages enforcement for unpaid tolls under state legislation and have access to registration and licencing information needed to issue these reminder emails. While NSW Motorways sends the notifications, your toll account is still managed by your provider (such as Linkt or E-Toll).
Can I opt out of receiving these emails?
No, you can’t opt out of notifications tied to registration records. The best way to reduce reminders is to open a tolling account, link your vehicle and keep your payment details up to date. If you need to update contact details for your vehicle registration, do so via Service NSW.
When will I receive the email?
Reminders are typically sent 3-4 days after the trip (but can take up to 6 days), giving you time to act before a toll notice is issued.
What if I made multiple trips?
You’ll only be sent 1-2 reminder emails per day. If you drove on more than one toll road, you need to pay for all of your trips - not just the one listed in the email.
You may receive separate emails if you’ve travelled on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Tunnel and any other NSW toll road.
What if I own multiple vehicles?
Registered owners of multiple vehicles might receive multiple notifications if multiple vehicles are detected on a toll road without a valid account or pass.
I wasn’t driving - can I nominate another driver?
No. Unfortunately you can only nominate after a toll notice is issued.
I sold the vehicle - what should I do?
You can update your records via Service NSW . Don't forget to remove the vehicle from your Linkt account.
Will I be charged for receiving the reminder email?
No. There are no fees for receiving digital reminders,; they are designed to help you act sooner.
My car is registered in another state, why didn’t I get an email?
Early notifications currently use NSW registration data. Vehicles registered interstate (including ACT) aren’t included in this first stage. You can still search and pay online open a Linkt account to pay.
What support is available if I’m having trouble paying?
Linkt Assist can help with confidential support, including payment options. You can also use Service NSW resources if your matter has progressed to a toll notice.
