About vehicle classes

  • On this page

  • Vehicle classes
  • Vehicle class glossary
  • Interstate travel

The tolls you pay depend on your vehicle’s class and the distance you travel. In Victoria, a vehicle class is determined by the total size, weight and configuration of your vehicle.

Info
Vehicle class remains the same when towing a caravan or trailer.

Vehicle classes

Motorcycles

A two-wheeled motor vehicle, including motor vehicles with a trailer or sidecar.

Cars

A motor vehicle that is not:

  1. a motorcycle;
  2. a light commercial vehicle;
  3. a heavy commercial vehicle; or
  4. a long heavy commercial vehicle,

even if the motor vehicle is towing a trailer or caravan.

Light commercial vehicles (LCV)

Any two-axle rigid vehicle with a cab chassis construction, with a gross vehicle mass that is greater than 1.5 tonnes but less than 4.5 tonnes, but does not include a bus seating more than 12 people.

Heavy commercial vehicles (HCV)

Any motor vehicle that is:

  1. rigid with two axles and cab chassis construction and a gross vehicle mass greater than 4.5 tonnes;
  2. rigid with three or more axles and cab chassis construction and gross vehicle mass greater than 1.5 tonnes;
  3. articulated and has a cab chassis construction and gross vehicle mass greater than 1.5 tonnes; or
  4. any bus seating more than 12 people,

but does not include a Long Heavy Commercial Vehicle (see below).

Long heavy commercial vehicles (Long HCV)

Any motor vehicle that:

  1. meets any of the first four of the heavy commercial vehicle criteria (see above); and
  2. has a length equal to or greater than 26 metres.

Note: can be a vehicle or combination of vehicles such as trailers.

When you log in to the Linkt website, your vehicle class will still be HCV. However, if the HCV is 26m or longer at the time of travel on CityLink or West Gate Tunnel, we will classify that trip as a Long HCV. Please note the Long HCV class will only apply when the West Gate Tunnel opens later in 2025.

Vehicle class glossary

  • Gross vehicle mass (GVM)

    Is the weight of the vehicle and the amount it can carry.

    Your vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) can be located on your vehicle’s compliance plate or certificate and is usually stated in your vehicle’s owner manual.

  • Chassis construction types

    A cab chassis is a vehicle that comes with a cab (the driver's compartment) and a chassis (the frame), which can be with and without a back on it (e.g. tray, tub, Ford Ranger).

    Cab chassis vehicles:

    Monocoque chassis (single frame) vehicles:

  • Rigid truck

    Has two-axle sets, a driver's position, a steering system, motive power and a single rigid chassis.

  • Articulated truck

    Is made of two sections (e.g. a tractor and a trailer connected by a pivoted bar).

  • Axle

    A central shaft fixed to the wheels rotating with them.

Interstate travel

The way your trips are classified may differ from state to state, depending on what road you’re travelling on. Find out more about vehicle classifications in Sydney and Brisbane.
