Get ready for your first West Gate Tunnel trip

The West Gate Tunnel will offer a vital new alternative to the West Gate Bridge, giving you more choice when driving between the west, city, northern suburbs and regional centres like Geelong and Ballarat.

Before the West Gate Tunnel opens later this year, get ready with our travel tips.

Know your lane

For a smoother trip, choose your lane early and follow overhead signage. On the West Gate Freeway, there are new dedicated express lanes for the West Gate Bridge and other lanes which lead to the West Gate Tunnel.

AM peak toll

If you’re heading to the city via the West Gate Tunnel, you’ll notice that the City West exits to Footscray Road, Wurundjeri Way and Dynon Road will be tolled on weekdays (excluding public holidays) between 7am-9am.

If you are driving a light vehicle such as a motorcycle, car or van, and you use these exits during the weekday peak, you'll see an AM peak toll charge of your trip history in addition to the tunnel toll.

All set with Linkt

With a Linkt account, you can pay for travel on the West Gate Tunnel, CityLink and other Australian toll roads.

No beep, no charge

If you have an active tag, it will only beep if you pass through a light vehicle toll point.

If you use the new AM peak toll point connecting the West Gate Tunnel inbound to the City West exits, you’ll only hear the tag beep from 7am-9am weekdays (except Victorian public holidays).
