We’ve seen an increase in incidents involving heavy vehicles, leading to significant delays and safety risks for everyone.
There are two main causes, according to an analysis of these incidents in 2025.
Non-emergency stops
Heavy vehicles and trucks are using emergency lanes and emergency bays for reasons other than emergencies. Stopping in live traffic is unsafe and illegal.
Vehicle breakdowns
Mechanical issues have increased, resulting in almost 1,500 breakdowns requiring heavy haulage. On average, these breakdowns took more than 90 minutes to clear.
Drivers are exiting their vehicles in live traffic, which creates a significant safety risk to themselves and other motorists.
How you can help
If you drive a heavy vehicle or manage a fleet of heavy vehicles, take the following steps to help prevent these incidents:
- Only stop for emergencies: If you need to take a break or adjust your load, please exit the toll road and find a safe place to pull over.
- Keep your vehicle well-maintained: Regular checks - especially for tyres and hoses - can prevent many common causes of breakdowns.
- If you do break down, stay safe: Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on, switch on your hazard lights and call us on 13 33 31.
