The reference design for the proposed Logan West Upgrade has been released, marking an important milestone in plans to improve safety, reduce congestion and support future growth along the Logan Motorway.
Transurban is partnering with the Queensland Government to develop plans to upgrade approximately 10 kilometres of the western section of the Logan Motorway, between the Ipswich Motorway and Mount Lindesay Highway.
The Logan Motorway is a vital transport corridor that supports more than 210,000 vehicle trips every day, including the movement of more than $1 billion worth of freight. As population growth continues across South East Queensland, demand on the motorway is expected to increase significantly.
Feedback from community consultation held in late 2024 has helped shape the project's reference design, with motorists and local communities identifying congestion, safety, local connectivity and ramp improvements as key priorities.
Transurban General Manager for Queensland, Theuns Lloyd, said community feedback played an important role in developing the proposed design.
"We heard from communities along the Logan Motorway and the motorists who use it every day. They told us that reducing congestion and improving safety are their priorities, and the reference design reflects that feedback.
"The proposed upgrades are focused on delivering safer, more reliable journeys for the thousands of people who travel on the Logan Motorway every day."
What the proposed upgrade includes
The reference design includes a range of improvements aimed at addressing current and future transport needs, including:
- improvements to motorway capacity and traffic flow
- upgrades to key on and off ramps
- improved accessibility for heavy and oversized vehicles
- safer and more efficient travel for motorists
- infrastructure designed to support future population and economic growth.
Community feedback also highlighted the importance of managing noise and environmental impacts, which will continue to be considered as planning and design progresses.
Supporting the local community
As part of its commitment to creating a positive legacy, Transurban, in partnership with the Queensland Government, plans to introduce a community grants program during construction. The program will support local organisations and initiatives focused on:
- road safety
- financial inclusion
- environmental sustainability
- First Nations outcomes.
While some suggestions received during consultation, including local road improvements, new bicycle infrastructure and broader motorway extensions, are outside the current project scope, this feedback has been documented to help inform future planning.
What's next?
The project will now move into the detailed design and planning approvals phase.
A reference design represents the project's preferred approach at this stage of planning. It outlines how the upgrade could be delivered and the benefits it is expected to provide, but it is not the final approved design. The design will continue to be refined as the project progresses and we’ll continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.
Subject to approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2027 and be completed before 2032.
