Road safety in the West Gate Tunnel

The West Gate Tunnel is equipped with advanced safety technology to help keep traffic flowing smoothly and manage any incidents.

We monitor our roads 24/7 to watch for breakdowns or accidents, and we’ll respond quickly if you have an issue.

Learn what to do if your vehicle breaks down on the West Gate Tunnel.

Road technology

  • 24/7 monitoring
Our cameras monitor traffic conditions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If anything happens, we’ll know about it and we’ll respond quickly.
  • Automatic incident detection systems
We detect stopped vehicles and lost loads within seconds, so we can act quickly to protect you and manage any incidents.
  • Digital signs for on-road updates
Digital signs along the roadway will keep you updated on speed limits, lane closures, and any upcoming roadworks and road closures.
  • Information on travel time
Digital signs along the roadway will give you a real-time estimate of travel times to key destinations.

Other safety measures

  • Incident response
If you break down or have an accident, our incident response crew will be sent to help you right away.
  • New speed limits
In the tunnels, the default speed limit is 80 km/h. The West Gate Freeway’s default speed limit is 100 km/h, except for a default speed limit of 80 km/h between the tunnel exit and the Millers Road outbound entry ramp.
  • Alternative routes
Placarded and long heavy commercial vehicles (Long HCVs) cannot travel in the West Gate Tunnel. New Hyde Street ramps will give you an alternative route to and from the west.
