Toll pricing

There is an electronic toll point on the upgraded West Gate Freeway between Millers and Williamstown roads for heavy and long vehicles using West Gate Tunnel, the Hyde Street ramps or continuing on over West Gate Bridge.

All heavy vehicles will pay a single toll at this toll point - no matter if you use the tunnel, the West Gate Bridge or the Hyde Street ramps.

Long heavy commercial vehicle (Long HCV) is a new vehicle class for heavy vehicles that are 26m in length or more. This class will apply for the West Gate Tunnel and CityLink.

Look out for the on-road vehicle class signs which show the vehicle class that is tolled. Learn more about vehicle classes

Daily multi-trip discounts

HCV and Long HCV vehicles which make multiple trips on the West Gate Freeway during the same day (12am-12am) will have discounted tolls after the fourth trip, and no further charge after the eighth trip.

Multi-road toll cap

Heavy vehicles travelling on CityLink and the West Gate Tunnel will have tolls for a single continuous trip capped.

The multi-road trip cap can provide a discount for vehicles travelling on the West Gate Freeway and onto Monash Freeway.

What will I pay?

If you travel on the West Gate Tunnel and CityLink and you are eligible for daily multi-trip discounts or multi-road trip caps, you will be charged for whichever discount gives the lower toll cost. This means you will be charged the lowest amount for your travel.

Placarded vehicles

Placarded HCVs and Long HCVs cannot travel in the West Gate Tunnel. Instead, these vehicles can use the new Hyde Street ramps as an alternative route to and from the west.

If you're driving a heavy vehicle with a dangerous goods placard and your trip begins in the port precinct and travels only on Bolte Bridge, you will not pay a toll for this trip. If your travel continues to other parts of CityLink or the upgraded West Gate Freeway, the tolls for these later sections only will be charged.

Choose your lane early

When travelling on the West Gate Tunnel, it’s important to choose your lane early.

Plan your journey by:

Common journeys

  • Heading towards the city

Take the left lanes for West Gate Tunnel and freeway exits. Keep right for express lanes to the West Gate Bridge.

    • If you’re travelling on either the M80 or Princes Freeway toward the city, you’ll need to decide early if you want to take the bridge or the tunnel, and get into the correct lanes just before the M80 interchange.
    • If you get on the freeway at Grieve Parade or Millers Road, you’ll make a choice just after passing Millers Road.
  • Heading away from the city
    • If you’re travelling south on CityLink towards the West Gate Tunnel, you’ll need to decide early and get into the two left lanes when you see the signs for ‘M4 West Gate Tunnel / Avalon Airport’.
    • After exiting the tunnel onto the West Gate Freeway:
      • Use the right lane and follow the signs for ‘M80 Ring Road’ to continue to the M80 interchange.
      • Use the left lanes and follow the signs for ‘M1 Geelong’ to get to the Princes Freeway.

If you’re travelling away from the city on the West Gate Freeway from the bridge, you’ll need to decide early if you’re heading to the Princes Freeway or M80 Ring Road, or exiting at Millers Road or Grieve Parade, and get into the correct lanes on the West Gate Bridge.

High clearances

The West Gate Tunnel has a 4.6m clearance.

Note that the Burnley, Domain, Mullum Mullum and Melba tunnels have height limits of 4.65m.

These no-truck zones will include:

  • Francis Street in Yarraville
  • Somerville Road in Yarraville
  • Buckley Street in Footscray
  • Moore Street in Footscray
  • Hudsons Road in Spotswood
  • Blackshaws Road in Altona North

A night-time and weekend no-truck zone will be in place on

  • Williamstown Road (weekdays 8pm - 6am, and weekends from Friday 8pm - Monday 6am)

Some exemptions will apply to trucks with local origins and destinations in the no-truck zones.
